Home Business Success and Achievement Takes Time
GT Bulmer © Affiliate Power Central
I am in the middle of an intense writing project for a local client and let me tell you, I have been reading some incredible stories of determination and commitment. If you think home business success and achievement takes time, you might consider the demands and challenges faced by adult students working towards a university degree.
My task is to write a short bio for each student, to be read by a narrator as the student walks across the stage to receive his or her degree. I will have as many as 500 bios to write over the next few weeks.
These are committed individuals seeking greater success and achievement, greater knowledge, personal skills and professional credentials in order to advance in their chosen fields. In most cases, they are doing this
while still working full time and raising a family.
Their level of determination, focus and commitment is evidenced by how they spend their “free time” during the program, which can last for several years depending on the field: instead of spending time with family or socializing with friends, in most cases, these students must use every bit if free time they can reading, studying, writing papers, doing required projects and, in some cases, working on site in their chosen fields to get practical, hands-on experience.
Why do they do it? Well, they do it because they are focused on their personal career goals and also for the ultimate benefit of their family. They have a vision and a plan. They are willing to endure short term pain for long term gain. Those who persevere succeed in getting their degree. Although the journey is sometimes a rocky one, in the end, it is worth the effort.
What does this have to do with home business success? It all relates to personal development. Whether you are seeking a university degree or working at building your home-based Internet business, the speed of your success and achievement will be determined by the level of your commitment to the plan and your ability to stay focused on the goal.
There are two different skill sets you need to succeed in your home business. You need personal skills and you need business skills. Business skills can be learned online from mentors in your field of interest who are already enjoying success. Personal skills can be learned
through educational programs like those offered by Brian Tracy International.
If you make personal development a priority, you will accelerate your chances for online success. If you fail to work on personal development, you will be holding yourself back and missing out on opportunities to maximize your marketing efforts and income potential. The choice is yours.
It can take an adult student a number of years to earn a university degree. Likewise, it can take an aspiring Internet Marketer a number of years to achieve financial success. The point is, you have to be committed to your plan and focused on developing your skills.
There’s no way around it: home business success and achievement takes time, so you had better start learning the skills you need, today, so you can begin earning the income you want tomorrow.

Hi GT
I really enjoyed reading your post – you are so right that home business success and achievement takes time and those who are willing to endure short term pain for long term gain will be those who achieve their goals and ultimate success.
Your latest writing assignment certainly sounds very interesting.
Kind regards
Cynthia Minnaar
Hi GT
Looks like you have quite a task ahead of you. Personal development is key to gaining success in any field and the saying I think it was by Jim Rohn “What is important is not the amount of money that you make but the person you become in the process” I really found your post helpful thank you.

Hey GT – Great Post my friend. One question I had for you – Speaking from a point of view where I work from home, how do you best seperate work time from family time. I speak from personal experience where I’m not very good at differentiating as work time always goes into my personal time. I find it difficult to expalin to my girls that I still need to finish an article or still need to make a chnage to my site.
Hello, Cynthia:
Thanks you for visiting and commenting. It seems most achievement in life is based on short term pain for long term gain! LOL. The spoils do typically go to those who persevere.

Hi, Michelle:
Pleased to see you here commenting. Thee is so much truth in the quote from Jim that you just mentioned. This client writing project I am doing is helping to hone my skills to become a better writer for my Internet and Affiliate Marketing projects, too. I’m enjoying the project, I enjoy writing AND it’s helping the other aspect of my business career!

Hi, Tim:
Thanks for visiting, and for the awesome question! My kids are grown and away from home (I have four grandkids, soon to be five), so it is basically my spouse who I have to share my time with.
She works at a day job (which she very much enjoys) and I work from home … which I absolutely enjoy! During the day, I have few interruptions. In the evening, we spend a few hours together during dinner and after. We also try to go for evening walks around our (shrinking) neighborhood. Used to be just trees. Afterwords, I head back to my home office where I’ll continue on one project or another for another four hours or so, depending on the evening. She doesn’t often interrupt me, but when she needs to, it’s no problem. I am available.
My recommendation to you is try your best to schedule some specific time for your girls, even if it’s sometimes only 20 min. or half an hour. But schedule it and let them know that it’s their time. And that you have to get back to work afterwords. Be sure to schedule times where you can also devote a few hours to them doing something (like on weekends).
I know that as Internet Marketers we are keen to do everything that can be done to advance our business and increase our home business income, but in the big scheme of things, a delay of a few minutes or a few hours here and there doesn’t make a big difference. With your daughters, you are building memories and bridges and a foundation for a happy future. If you give them some scheduled and focused time on a regular weekly basis, your joy and peace of mind will be magnified many times over. It’s worth it, for family!

Hi GT,
This is a great post. To be successful at anything takes time and commitment. A home based business is no different. It is so easy to get distracted from what you need to be doing to build a home based business. I find myself being distracted just by different things in the APG.
Thanks for the post.

Hello, Lyle:
Thanks for posting a comment. Yes, patience and persistence are so important to long term success. Clear goals and a clear, detailed plan of action can help to develop and maintain the necessary focus.
I hear you about the Affiliate Power Group (APG). It is a great membership site for Internet Marketing info, training and support, but there is so much awesome info available, a person can only review it a little each day. We need to keep a balance between “learning” and “doing.” Thanks again, Lyle. I’ll see you around the Net!

Hi GT
Looks like you will be a busy man for the next few weeks. You are so right when you say “you had better start learning the skills you need, today, so you can begin earning the income you want tomorrow”.To often tomorrow comes and we have no idea what to do.

Hi, John:
Thanks for stopping by and posting a comment. I am almost half way through the writing project I mentioned in this blog post. Everything wraps up the second week in June, and then that’s it for that project until next April or May! If all goes well, I will be chosen as the writing contractor again next year.
Just like any form of home business success, a career as a well-paid freelance writer begins with the desire to do it, the determination to do what it takes to develop the skills, and a vision for what you want the result to be. Five years ago I only dreamed of getting paid what I do now for my writing services, locally in my own town. Now I need to somehow mirror that level of personal success and achievement in my Affiliate Marketing business!

Hi GT,
Wow – that’s quite a project
I agree with what you say in this post and I’m a strong believer that personal development skills and perseverence have a big role in your success with home business.
Cheers,
Suzanne
Hi, Suzanne:
Thanks for the comment. Yes, a big writing project. Most of the writing is finished now. I may have a few more bios to write over the next couple of days, then the mornings of Thursday, Friday and Saturday I have to attend the ceremonies and be on call in case any students show up unscheduled.
I have truly been inspired by many of the stories of perseverance, dedication and academic personal development that these adult students have to tell. Most are working full time, plus looking after families PLUS working towards a university degree! If we, as Internet business people, can apply the same determination to our home business, we will surely succeed big time!

Hi GT
Great post, I totally agree with you it certainly does take time & a lot of patience but I think most of all the determination needs to keep ticking in order for us to succeed. I find that it can be very easy to get distracted especially when my kids are around but like you say everything needs to be balanced fairly.
Thanks
Russell
Hi, Russell:
Thanks for visiting and posting a comment. Working from home presents many challenges and as you mentioned, determination is a big factor. Distractions are common. My kids are grown and away from home … but there are still other family members who phone or drop in or otherwise need my time and attention. It helps to have goals and plans (… and sometimes, back-up plans!) to help keep us focused when we lose our concentration.
