Before you can market and promote your home based Internet business you need to determine your marketing focus and to do that, you need to do some niche market research. Here are a few tips to get you started.

Your aim is to find the most suitable line of products or services to specialize in so you can build the theme and focus of your website and your marketing efforts around them. You must be comfortable with what you sell, but it must also be sufficiently profitable to make it worth your while.

Of course, you want a niche that is reasonably popular and that lends itself well to marketing, promotion and content creation. Your ultimate goal is to become recognized as the authority in that particular field. How do you determine the popularity of a niche? …

One good way to establish the popularity of a certain marketing niche is to use the Google AdWords keyword tool. I use this tool to choose the keywords for every article and blog post I write and it is great for doing niche market research as well.

Niche Market ResearchUsing this free tool, type in the niche you are researching and it will tell you the number of searches performed each month and will give you a list of related keywords.

If you have an AdWords account and are signed in, you will also see the average price you might pay to advertise on the first page of Google results for the term. This will give you a feel for the popularity and the profitability of the niche being researched.

To further research the niche, you can do a direct search in the Google search engine to find out what kind of competition you may have to face in the niche. Just do a search by entering the niche name with “quotation marks” around it.

The higher the number of results returned, the more competition there is. You may not be able to tell the quality of these competitors simply by looking at the search results, so if you are serious about the niche and you want to know more about the competition, you can visit their websites to see what they are promoting and how they market it.

Since a large part of your marketing will revolve around keyword content, you can take your research to another level by using available tools to more closely analyze the keywords you may want to use. Tools like Traffic Travis will analyze things like how many inbound links are pointing to websites already ranking for the niche terms and keywords you may be using. If you want to rank better than another website, the number of inbound links is one factor that must be considered.

The effort you put into your niche market research now will pay off later in the form of a much more successful and profitable home based Internet business. When you find a niche market with high search volume, good AdWords advertiser spend and relatively low competition, you will have found a true winner. Go for it!
