Most people dream of achieving success in some area of their life, whether it is personal or business or whatever. Some people just seem to fall into it naturally. But most of us have to work at it purposefully!

What I mean is you’ve got to clearly know what you want, where you are going and how to get there before you embark on your journey, otherwise you will end up simply spinning your wheels in frustration.

Now, I know what most people think: they think that they DO know what they want, and where they are going, and how to get there. But when their efforts produce less than spectacular results, rather than analyzing the problem from an internal perspective, as they should, they try to place the blame for it externally. …

They will blame circumstances, or market conditions, or unsupportive people in their lives, or the marketing company they promote, or the leaders they look to for guidance in that marketing plan, or any of a number of other external factors.

What they really need to do is step back from the situation, relax, and take a long, hard look at their personal goals, their plans and their methods of approach. This can be challenging to do. In fact, it must be very challenging, because so many people jump from one activity to the next without making progress and without truly learning from or building upon the previous experience.

It’s like that old saying we like to tell each other: “If you keep doing what you’ve been doing, you are going to keep getting what you’ve been getting.”

The secret to achieving success is simply this: Plan purposefully

1. Know What You Want

Achieving SuccessWe are not talking about daydreams here. This is not wishful thinking or hoping good things will happen. This is taking a sober look at where you are right now in your life and where you WANT to be in two years, five years, 10 years and beyond.

What type of person do you want to become? What type of business or profession or endeavour truly excites and enthuses you? If there were no barriers, what kind of business or marketing activities would you pursue?

Basically, what is your definition of success and achievement and what would your ideal life and lifestyle look like? Determine this and create a vision with absolute clarity.

2. Where Are You Going?

Rome wasn’t built in a day and personal change doesn’t happen overnight. Everything takes time. You will need a road map to take you from where you are today to the place you want to arrive at tomorrow.

Changes in your thinking, your perspectives, your habits and maybe even your present lifestyle may be necessary to help you get on the path to productivity and prosperity. You may need to spend less time on leisure and entertainment, and more time on education and personal development.

Once your personal goals and definition of success are clear, use these as guides for every decision you make concerning employment, business or marketing activities, educational opportunities and even social activities. Seek activities that support your future and advance your goal-seeking efforts, for example, instead of Thursday nights with the gang at the local pub, join a community service club, or a local business association.

3. How Will You Get There?

More than a roadmap to guide your decisions and activities, you must develop a formal action plan. This plan must define the specific actions necessary to move you towards your goal.

What education or training do you need? What personal skills do you need to develop? What values must you adopt and focus on strengthening? How long will each of these take and what other positive habits can you work on developing while these are in process?

Your formal action plan will be similar to a business plan. A business plan covers all of the goals or objectives for the business, including the steps and activities necessary to bring them about, targeted timelines, dollar figures and so on. Clearly and specifically.

Achieving success on purpose takes personal introspection and purposeful planning. The more attention you give to these, the more likely you will reach your goals. You will also speed up your progress.

One resource that I always recommend to friends and associates is the audio program from Brian Tracy International called The Universal Laws of Success and Achievement.
