When I was young, I used to hear people say things like “It’s a poor workman who blames his tools.” They were suggesting that the tool wasn’t the cause of poor workmanship, it was the workman’s skill with the tools that was the issue.

Hmm. Now that I think of it, I seem to recall more recent instances of that reference around my own home, coming from my spouse! LOL, I guess I’m more of a writer than I am a handyman.

The fact is, the more we work on personal development and improving our abilities and our skills using the tools and resources at our disposal, the more productive we will be and the better quality we will produce. …

This principle is true in all areas of our lives. We can apply it to physical projects, to relationships and interpersonal communication skills, to business and marketing tasks, to leisure activities like sports and gaming, and to a variety of other areas in our daily existence.

In all cases, if we work at improving our knowledge, our skills and our abilities in a particular area, we will enjoy improved results, more success and achievement and will therefor feel more fulfilled as a person.

One quote that comes to mind when I think about this concept is this:

“When an archer misses the mark, he turns and looks for the fault within himself. Failure to hit the bull’s-eye is never the fault of the target. To improve your aim, improve yourself.”
~ Gilbert Arland

We can look for all kinds of external reasons why things aren’t working for us, why our efforts are failing to hit the intended target, but when all is said and done, it most often comes down to how well we are prepared for the task at hand.

If we have taken adequate time to learn the technique and practice the technique, we will eventually become a master of the technique.

Until then, stop blaming the tool or the target! Instead, look for a way to improve yourself. Tune up your talents to hit your target.
